So maybe you’ve tried a few different essential oils or have several different symptoms and have found a few different oils for each symptom and what to use one than one oil. Not only is that fine but it’s a great way of combining the wonderful benefits of these oils. There are several things you might want to consider before you start blending oils.
So let’s take a look at some of the things that make a good essential oil blend.
Tips For Making An Essential Oil Blend
Oils from the same group tend to blend well together for example –
-
Flower oils – Rose, Geranium and Jasmine
-
Herb oils – Basil, Rosemary and Thyme
-
Spice oils – Cinnamon, Ginger and Black Pepper
-
Woody oils – Sandalwood, Cedarwood and Rosewood
-
Menthol oils – Eucalyptus, Fennel and Tea Tree oil
But you don’t have to limit yourself because these groups can work well when blended with each other for example –
-
Spices and citrus oils – Ginger and Lemmon or Cinnamon and Orange
-
Woody and citrus oils – Cedarwood and Lime or Bergamot and Rosewood
Just as some groups work well together there are others that don’t for example -

Certain oils have very strong scents which can overwhelm any combinations these include –
-
Peppermint
-
Fennel
-
Tea Tree
-
Clove

Thyme
I would not personally recommend you make a blend with more than three oils, sometimes less is more. Using three carefully selected oils is better than five or six ill-chosen oils. Remember you don’t need to blend oils at oil to feel there benefits so throwing them all in isn’t necessary.
When blending oils about 3 drops of each oil will be enough.

It’s such a fascinating topic, learning about different oils, if they are a top note oil or a middle note for example. A good blend would have an oil from each of the notes top, middle and bottom. For example Bergamot is a top note oil, Rosemary is a middle note oil and Ginger is a bottom note oil. This may all seem a little complicated so remember it’s not essential to know as you start out on your journey of for making essential oil blend so don’t worry for now.
As a certified Aromatherapist I always advise my clients to seek I seek medical advice for any illnesses they have. Particularly if these go on for a period of time and don’t improve after a few days of using alternative medicine. I also would not advise any client to abandon conventional treatments, nor disregard the advice of your medical team in favour of alternative healthcare such as aromatherapy. Essential oils can be used alongside these more conventional treatments and can be extremely beneficial.
